GOSA is excited to offer an accessible outdoor recreational opportunity on one of our properties to ensure everyone in our community can enjoy the great outdoors. We partnered with The Last Green Valley to document the 0.6-mile-long accessible trail at our Avery Farm Nature Preserve in Groton and Ledyard. The trail offers views of a 38-acre marsh, farm fields, hedgerows, and an historic farmhouse. This scenic trail is surrounded by beautiful seasonal foliage and wildlife that can be enjoined throughout the year. Specific signage was developed for the trail and installed at the trailheads. GOSA hopes to continue to add similar trails to other properties in the future.
On a personal note, GOSA Board Member Wendy Spader’s son Kaleb’s main source of mobility is a wheelchair. She has been bringing him hiking throughout the northeast since he was an infant, but once he outgrew a hiking backpack the prospect of getting him out on the trails became challenging for the family. The trail at Avery Farm Nature Preserve is wheelchair accessible and allows their family to get outdoors together again. Thank you to GOSA and The Last Green Valley for such thoughtful consideration and efforts to make this happen for all families to enjoy the outdoors together!
